Zover mij bekend heeft Mercedes alleen éénmalig deze Stadtwagen en een Cabrio variant (licht blauwe 2.6) gemaakt, maar deze zijn nooit verkocht en staan in het museum.

Iets meer onderzoek leerde mij het volgende, en het leek me leuk om hier te delen:

In een speciale tentoonstelling toonde het Mercedes-Benz Museum iets 'nieuws' op de onderste verdieping van de parkeergarage: de Mercedes-Benz E 190 stadsauto van 1984.

Kort na de presentatie van de 190 sedan in december 1982 stapelen er in de vakpers geruchten en speculaties op over een compacte variant van deze serie.

In 1984 stelt Mercedes de hier getoonde auto officieel als "experimenteel voertuig voor rally racen" voor, maar het is bekend als de "stadsauto". Voor deze experimentele bouw werd de wielbasis is ingekort tot slechts 2,22m.

Voor het hatchback-ontwerp wordt de achterklep van een W123 T-model aangepast. De stadsauto had 90 pk bij een toerental van 5000u / min met een 4-cilinder (inhoud 1996 cc).

Uiteindelijk werd dit prototype niet gebruikt, en ook de productie heeft hij nooit gehaald. Het blijft één van de kleine, weinig bekende modellen met (of zonder) ster.
